Joel Spolsky wants a linker, you know, the simple app that lets you build an executable which doesn’t require external .dlls …
Microsoft, wake up, get us some nice 1950s-era linker technology, and let me make a single EXE that runs on any computer with Win 98 or later and no other external dependencies. Otherwise .NET is fatally flawed for consumer, downloaded software.
Makes sense to me, honestly. When I think about the 80MB of downloads you have to go through to get the latest .NET framework … and then consider that they seem to be planning on releasing new frameworks anually, it makes me wonder: Am I going to have to keep old frameworks on my PC’s to keep old apps running? Does that mean that in 4 years, in order to get all my “old” apps running correctly I’m going to need to download and install 480MB of frameworks?
