Windows OneCare is being designed to address core safety concerns such as worms, viruses and spyware, according to a story in eWeek. It’s a software “service” that they will offer to consumers with anti-virus, anti-spyware, an enhanced two-way firewall, security checks to make sure Windows settings are properly set, and the ability to schedule maintenance activities like virus and spyware updates, disk defragmentation, and data backup. Building on the “Security Center” in Windows XP Sp2, it’s intended to give users a central place to check that all of their security precautions are in place and up to date.
From the sounds of it, it’s going to be a subscription service, where you will pay an annual fee, most likely in line with the cost of current anti-virus products’ annual renewal fees. EWeek is also reporting that it will include a live support element and will be marketed by MSN. They are reportedly rolling the service out to their employees first, and then will open a more public beta.
