Just noticed this piece of news on ADT today which actually came out last week … Symantec is asking the courts to stop not only the sale, but even the development of Microsoft’s Windows Vista operating system (Beta 2 was just released). They claim that Microsoft has misused some strorage technology they licensed which Symantec licensed to them.
The argument seems to be over how much control and intellectual property rights Microsoft bought from Veritas in 2004 (a year before Symantec bought Veritas). Microsoft claims they bought Intelectual property rights to all of this technology, but Symantec claims that they do not have permission to develop a competing product — which I must admit, sounds ridiculous. Why would Veritas have allowed Microsoft to make a competing product (especially when they are building it into the OS)? Who knows … maybe they knew they were going to sell the company anyway … or maybe Microsoft is just trying an end run, thinking nobody is paying attention, since the whole company got bought.
At any rate, if the court order is granted, it’s certainly going to stall Vista even further (Balmmer says it won’t but then, he’s already “hinted it will be late anyway”:http://www.webpronews.com/financial/news/wpn-64-20060524BallmerWhispersOfVistaDelay.html.
