Right down the road in Buffalo they sentenced a spammer to seven years in prison last week.

Howard Carmack sent 850 million junk e-mails through accounts he opened with stolen identities ... so he got 7 years in the slammer on top of a $16.4 million civil judgment against him [laughing] related to claims of fraud by Earthlink and some 8 individual plaintiffs. He says “I obviously regret this whole involvement” ... yeah, no joke!

Here’s hoping that will actually scare some people straight, but don’t get too excited [:(]. If you look carefully, you’ll see this guy is going to jail for the fraud involved in creating the accounts, not for sending spam. As long as we have to get creative to stop these guys, it’s not going to stop other people from thinking they can get away with it. And until they go after the advertisers (that is, the people who payed Carmack to send those spams with his illegally acquired accounts), they aren’t going to slow the flood of junk emails.
