SourceForge is now allowing developers to accept PayPal donations through them. I’m not exactly sure what made them think to do that, but their motivation is clear: 5% of any donation made to a developer through SourceForge goes to SourceForge itself.
I’m not criticising, they provide a valuable service, and since many of the developers taking advantage of their hosting and services are in fact, already getting donations anyway, SourceForge really deserves a cut. Of course, it’s a little awkward for them to decide how much of a cut, but there you go.
More interestingly, projects can accept donations too: all the lead developers have to “opt in” — oh yeah, getting donations is an opt-in feature — and then they can opt-in the project itself. It’s completely unclear to me why it’s opt-in. I suppose there’s some who want all donations to come directly to them, without SourceForge getting a cut. In that case they won’t opt in, but will instead use PayPal to request donations directly. [ ]
Well, anyway. This is not big news, but I figured I’d mention it, since I just clicked the ‘opt-in’ button so that from now on people who want to donate to me for GeoShell (it’s happened in the past, a couple of times) can choose to do it through SourceForge and give them their cut. [ ] Or you can decide not to ever donate since it now looks like I’m asking for money (I’m not, although, if you have a used Athlon thats better than my 1.4Ghz …). [
