Samurize hit 1.1 this week with their “Christmas Release” with some new features like a “server version” which can be run to output data as XML (or to a PNG) and a screen saver (which can display the data from the server version, for instance).
In case you don’t know what Samurize is, it’s a very nice program for displaying all sorts of information (like the currently playing song, your CPU temperature, the amount of space left on your disk drives, or even the weather forecast or tv schedule) on your desktop. It’s suprisingly easy to configure, and uses very little resources while giving you all sorts of scripting and information-viewing features.
This release may provide even more interesting applications, since anyone that wants to could write third-party applications which consume the XML output and display it. So shell developers that want to integrate the display of this data into their windows shells could write plugins which display data from the samurize server, instead of re-writing the data-gathering code. But then, why would you want to write your own display program when this release fixes bugs with the “pin to desktop” feature and a multimonitor glitch with fullscreen applications that change your desktop resolution.
And as a side note, I hadn’t seen the Samurize site in a while, and it’s finally looking professional.
