I assume everyone’s already heard the big news for the day (You should see Google News for today, it’s amazing how many different categories this news fits into): Saddam Hussein was found hiding in a hole 15 miles south of Tikrit … one of the most interesting articles was this one from a San Francisco Chronicle reporter who got to see the Iraqui reaction first hand …
the brooding despair that had engulfed the city over the past few months temporarily lifted. Radios played festive music, drivers in traffic jams blasted their horns even more than normal, and passengers in overcrowded mini-buses chanted “They got Saddam, they got Saddam.”
Well, sometimes the skeptic in me wants to actually be there to see first hand the reaction on the streets, rather than assuming the reporters aren’t just being optimistic, but for once I think I’ll suspend disbelief and accept that they’re even happier than the American’s are to hear that this chapter is really over. I mean, I’m happy about it, but I didn’t even crank up my radio, nevermind go get my AK47 [ ] and fire it into the air in celebration.
Actually the story does mention some people who aren’t happy about it: the former generals and loyalists, and some of the nationalist minded who would rather have any Iraqui in charge than the Americans … I’d say we still have our work cut out for us, but I think instead of editorializing about it, I’ll leave that to the proffesionals, most of whom can’t seem to refrain from sharing their opinions about what should be done “next.”:http://ww1.mid-day.com/news/world/2003/december/71354.htm
