New Desktop Toys

By Joel 'Jaykul' Bennett on 04-Apr-2005

Well, since I’ve been missing so many things, I figured I’d just throw up a quick post with some new toys:

First of all, there is a new release of SciTE text editor, and the WinMerge file-comparison tool, and FileZilla FTP, SFTP and SCP client…

ShirusuPad is a nifty little note pad for when you need to jot something down, and even has a feature for sticky-notes-like functionality. They released a new version in February after months and months of inactivity.

QuickChanger is a slick little wallpaper changer that lets you preview and switch wallpapers quick as a blink. It even has an (optional) random changer, and the ability to hide your desktop icons, and the ability to guess at reasonable text color for icons reasonable for a particular wallpaper.

Orbit is like an on-demand “dock” application, built using pie menus — a circular ring of buttons— that pops up around your mouse when you want it to. It can serve to launch any application, to switch between running apps, and more. It’s pretty slick looking as well, and can be skinned to whatever look you want. On the downside, it needs a reasonable graphics card to run with all it’s features on, although the graphics built into my motherboards at work will run it fine if I turn off the animations and transparency effects. It’s also a bit of a pain to add shortcuts to it, but you shouldn’t have to do that too often, and it’s obvious that you will want to set up the shortcuts by hand to use cool PNG icons …

About Huddled Masses

This is web site is dedicated to the musings of Joel Bennett (aka Jaykul) about technology, software, software development, the web, and the world.

Any resemblance of the views expressed and the views of my employer, my terminal, or the view out my window are purely coincidental. The resemblance between them and my own views is non-deterministic. The question of the existence of views in the absence of anyone to hold them is left as an exercise for the reader.

P.S.: I occasionally link to things I think are great. When I do, I occasionally find a "referral code" so I can make a little cash. I promise that I don't link to anything just because of that cash (I wouldn't cross the street for the amount of cash those links bring in, never mind write a whole blog post) ... but I do not promise that things I link to will stay great as time passes, nor that you will agree with me about their greatness!
