Google will temporarily stop scanning copyright-protected books from libraries into its database, after complaints from publishers that their copyrights were being violated.
Is Google moving too fast, and do they risk loosing their “good kid” vibe?
They certainly look likely to loose the lawsuit levelled against them by Microsoft after they poached one of Microsoft’s star employees to head their China operations. They lost the first challenge when the judge in the case issued a temporary restraining order against them, and Microsoft now claims they have even more evidence that Google intended to have Lee violate his contract with Microsoft.
And they also look bad for their peevish stance on C|Net’s story about using Google to find personal information, in fact, Redmond Magazine called them “petulant” and suggested they look like a moody teen fresh out of pimple cream (which is way more mental image than I needed). Of course, that’s on top of the actual story, which suggests that between Blogger, GMail, Orkut personal-networking, and their history of Google searches, maybe Google knows a little bit too much about people.
Anyway, with all of that, and now this thing with book publishers, August doesn’t look to be a good month for the search giant that wanted to be your friend. !(alignright)http://www.google.com/pfetch/dchart?s=GOOG!
