So, as the Wall Street Journal reports, Google is going to be offering CBS TV shows and NBA games for download via their video search site (for the usual $2 per episode?).
They have also created Google Pack a software bundle which is a real throwback to the old days of Microsoft Plus style packs: Firefox web browser, Norton AntiVirus, Acrobat Reader, Real Player, Trillian instant messenger (go Trillian!) and Ad-Aware, as well as all of Google’s software (Google Eart, Picasa, Google Talk, screensaver etc). Talk about a HUGE bundle. I hope they’re planning on giving it away via CD’s in the checkout isle of your favorite stores, because downloading all of that is going to take a while, even on broadband. Edit: Not only is it already available, you can choose which apps you want and there’s only a single license agreement, and no wizards to deal with … and it auto-updates all the included applications.
But the shocking news is that the company that promises to “do no evil” is releasing their own digital-rights-management (DRM) solution (Google Video Player) rather than using Real’s, or Apple’s, or Microsoft’s, or … which probably means yet another incompatible, locked-down, can’t play it on my handheld, media format.
Hopefully this is a Wall Street Journal mistake, or Google’s got something up their sleeve to create a cross-platform, cross-player DRM scheme …
