Well, I never previously mentioned NASA’s WorldWind, which is a really impressive 3D application for viewing the world using sattelite and other imagery, as well as all sorts of additional data. You can zoom around and see mountains rising up against the sky and more.
Google has now released their own 3D world application based on their aquisition of Keyhole. It also combines satellite imagery, and geographical data to allow you to zoom in and out as WordWind does. However, Google Earth is actually rather more impressive, particularly if you live in the US or England.
Google Earth includes street maps, 3D building in some cities, and all the power of Google Local and Google Maps, including directions, searching for local businesses, and more. It’s very cool, and it’s free (so is NASA’s WorldWind, but although it includes a lot of extra information, it doesn’t really do directions or Google Local searches … and it seems slower to me).
They do have a couple of paid versions: a $20 one which allows you to connect and track a GPS device, as well as printing higher-resolution images, as well as getting email tech support. For $400, you can import all sorts of your own data, and graph it, and have permission to use the data for commercial purposes and more…
